Mayfair was the site of an annual May Fair and spring cattle market that started in the late 1600s. The fair and market were suppressed in the reign of George III because of the notorious goings-on of the ‘lazy rascals’ and ‘sluttish strumpets’ who thronged there. The American connection to Mayfair dates back to the 1780’s, when John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers and later the second U.S. president, resided here as the American Ambassador to the Court of St. James.
